Copycat content is ruining your brand

Following the trend feels safe. In practice it makes your company harder to remember.

Open any feed and you will see the same formats, the same hooks and the same aesthetic repeated by companies that have nothing else in common. It is understandable. When a post performs well for someone else, copying it feels like a shortcut.

The cost of looking like everyone else

Attention is only valuable if people remember who earned it. Content that borrows another brand's format trains your audience to associate the idea with the original. Engagement may rise for a week while recognition quietly falls.

Why it happens

Copycat content is usually a symptom. It shows up when a company lacks a clear point of view, when the team has no guidelines for how the brand speaks, or when output targets are set without a strategy behind them. AI tools have sped this up, because generic prompts produce generic work.

What to do instead

  • Know what you believe. A clear position gives every piece of content something to say.
  • Build recognisable formats of your own and repeat them until they belong to you.
  • Use trends selectively, and only when they fit your message.
  • Give your team and your tools a reference library of your best work, so new content starts at your standard.

Measure the right things

Reach and likes tell part of the story. Look also at whether people can name you, whether inquiries mention your content and whether the right customers are engaging. Those signals show whether content is building the business or simply filling the calendar.

Original work takes more thought upfront. It also compounds, because every piece reinforces the last.
